Petition to Pass the Down Syndrome Non-Discrimination Act

8-16-17_Down_Syndrome.jpg

I sign this petition in support of H.B. 214/S.B. 164, legislation to protect unborn babies diagnosed with Down syndrome from abortion. Sadly, up to 90 percent of babies diagnosed with Down syndrome are aborted. It is time that Ohio opposes this kind of discrimination against our most vulnerable.

One of the main reasons why abortion is so disproportionately high in the case of Down syndrome is because of stigma. Women abort after a prenatal diagnosis of Down syndrome because of the perceived parenting burden and perceived quality of life of children with Down syndrome. These are reversible factors that depend on our efforts. But abortion is irreversible.

Please support the passage of this legislation and help Ohio become a more supportive and empathetic state that refuses to discriminate against babies diagnosed with Down syndrome.

We need to support, educate and bring society into this century on Down Syndrome. Stop linking this condition with fear and negativity. I don’t see the same outlook with any other condition. What if this was offered to other conditions? Would race and sex of an unborn child become next. What message is it giving to our children on how they should see others, we are damaging the next generation just as much as those who live with and support and love human beings with Down Syndrome. Stop picking on the easy target. You have tragic stories in the papers where babies are having life supports turned off, the concern of no quality of life, the cases go to high courts and the papers run stories every time, petition after petition. In effect this abortion rule is doing the same thing to unborn babies but with a known condition, with a condition that was first recorded in the 13th century surely by now we should be able to live with and embrace it. Where are the high courts, the disgust and dispair, the newspaper stories. Every child has the right to live. It’s a life. The abortion is based on what? There is no baby to see hooked up to machines, there are no medical teams accessing the vital signs to see quality of life. It’s all on assumption of a life inside another human being. The child is essentially being killed off because it may not fit into this world. This is the most saddest notion of it all. My son is 7 and the best little boy I could have ever have hoped for. He is my life and the most funniest, courageous, intelligent child. He is full of love and spirit. He is beautiful in every way possible. My husband and I took responsibility when we had a child even it had been an accident, which it wasn’t, no matter what, it was for life. That is the responsibility you as a parent take for bringing a child into the world. You can’t change your mind and decide to bail for a refund. It doesn’t work that way. If in fear then that needs to be shouted about and more support needs to be provided. If it’s affirdability or coping that needs to be shouted about and support provided. Enough is enough! If the temptation is there the innocent unborn lives will be taken. It shouldn’t be made so easy. WE ALL NEED TO GET A GRIP! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
