COLUMBUS, OhioToday, President Donald Trump announced Amy Coney Barrett as his new nominee for the Supreme Court of the United States. The vacant seat provides the opportunity for a pro-life majority on the Court for the first time since Roe v. Wade was decided.

“This is a historic moment,” said Michael Gonidakis, President of Ohio Right to Life. “At no time in our nation’s history have we been as close to having a Supreme Court that will reaffirm the right to life. For decades women have been victimized by the legalization of abortion and unborn children violently killed in the name of choice. It is poetic justice that the nomination of Judge Barrett could prove to be the final nail in Roe’s coffin.”

Amy Coney Barrett currently sits on the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals and is considered to embrace an originalist judicial philosophy. After graduating first in her class at Notre Dame law school, she served as a clerk for former pro-life Justice Antonin Scalia. Judge Barrett also was a professor of law at Notre Dame Law School. A faithful Catholic, she has seven children two of whom were adopted from Haiti.

“While there’s no guarantee that any SCOTUS appointee will be solely responsible for overturning of Roe, there is no doubt that Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination provides a once in a lifetime opportunity for the pro-life movement. We have the momentum and now is the time to act. With that in mind Ohio Right to Life is proud to announce that the Human Life Protection Act will soon be introduced by Ohio’s pro-life Senate President Larry Obhof. This legislation will serve as the trigger to end abortion in Ohio and will be our top priority going forward. Roe is on the ropes and it is only a matter of time before it falls. Ohio Right to Life is ready to lead the way to ensure that our great state is prepared for a post-Roe America.”

The Human Life Protection Act would prohibit all abortions except those necessary to save the mother’s life and would take effect when the United States Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade. This type of legislation often referred to as a “Trigger Ban” has already been enacted in nine other states.

“After decades of advocating tirelessly on behalf of vulnerable women and defenseless unborn babies we have reached a critical moment. We must move more boldly than ever before. Ohio is pro-life and we are incredibly close to ending abortion. Ohio Right to Life in conjunction with Senator Obhof stands ready to ensure that this happens. Our time is now.”

It starts off with the number one problem of abortion interpretation today " This legislation would prohibit all abortions except those necessary to save the mother’s life"… has become the ‘catch all phrase’ that allows a mother’s “Health”…and that includes MENTAL HEALTH (ie… it is just too stressful for me to have a baby right now).. language to continue.
As a former bedside Neonatal ICU and High risk delivery nurse, there is NO physical medical condition that exist today whereby we would PIT the mothers life OVER The fetus life.

BOTH can be protected. Phenomenal strides in the perinatal and neonatal medicine over the last 30 years have given us the tools to protect BOTH.
“Life of the Mother” is a very broad and dangerous language to continue without SPECIFIC defining of what “Health and life” actually are.
